Our project for 2020 is to look into the history of Abbotts Langley. We started the year with a short walk through the village and an extended tour of the church with particular attention to the many monuments to local residents. The church, dedicated to St. Lawrence was built between 1140 and 1150 on the site of a much earlier Saxon building. The Corpus Christi chapel was built between 1307 and 1327. In 1969 much of the fabric of the building was destroyed by fire and has been very carefully restored. Abbotts Langley was the birth place of the only Englishman to become Pope, in 1154, Nicholas Breakspear, who took the name of Adrian IV.
