September Walk : Queen’s Park and Kensal Green

Exploring London Group – Queen’s Park and Kensal Green – Wednesday September 30th and Friday October 2nd

As GK Chesterton wrote:-  For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen. Before we go to paradise, by way of Kensal Green.
Kensal Green being the site of the first and grandest of The Magnificent Seven cemeteries in London. There are indeed fine things to be seen in the area, I can’t comment on the news as they keep changing it.
We will start with a walk exploring the history of Queen’s Park and its current position as the trendiest area in London. I have heard it described as the likely offspring of a union between Primrose Hill and Notting Hill. It is particularly known for the number of media personnel. From BBC correspondents to documentary makers via actors and singers and the odd ‘celebrity’.
It boasts not just one but two famous Italian restaurants. One praised by Giles Coren and the other being better known as the star in a television advert, The Queen in the title is of course Victoria.
The Park started out as an agricultural show ground. Usual details, around 2 hours in duration and 2.5 miles in length. As it is our side of the city then I am aiming for a slightly earlier start of 11.00.

If you wish to apply for this walk,  please email the coordinator via the Coordinator (Group 081) page after 09.00 on 1 September with a maximum of 4 persons per application.

If you miss the 1st September you can still apply, especially If you can do both dates, so numbers can be balanced on both walks.

Remember if you apply for others, you are responsible for passing on messages. Please give your full names and U3A numbers and preferred date and indicate if you are flexible on the dates.

Experienced walk leaders choose different areas of London to explore.  The walks are not strenuous but are extremely popular and generally oversubscribed.
See emails sent out each month for information on the next month’s walk giving approximate times, length of walk and meeting place in London.  Application is by email.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Attendees to London Walks are reminded that they are responsible for their personal safety and comfort. They should not take any actions that could put others at risk. Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Travelling safely to and from the outside group activity.
  • Wearing clothing appropriate to the expected weather conditions.
  • Bringing water or other refreshments if required.
  • Bringing any necessary medication.
  • Being physically able to complete the activity.
  • Performing normal activities such as crossing roads safely.

Each U3A member is responsible for their own safety and needs to approach any activity in accordance with their own health and personal medical conditions.
